The African swine fever (ASF) epidemic is spreading more quickly, especially in the province of Iloilo, and the Department of Agriculture in Western Visayas is asking for the public’s and the media’s assistance in halting it.

Regional executive director for the DA, Jose Albert Barrogo, stated on Tuesday that both humans and even birds could carry disease.

There are now 14 municipalities in Iloilo with confirmed cases of ASF, in addition to Oton, San Miguel, Alimodian, Leganes, Sta. Barbara, New Lucena, Mina, Barotac Nuevo, Barotac Viejo, Dumangas, Banate, and Zarraga.

Other ASF cases have been documented in the province of Guimaras and the cities of Buenavista and Jordan.

Consumers should be cautious when taking processed items, including homemade goods, from the affected area, according to Barrogo.

The ASF virus can remain in processed foods for 1,000 days, he noted, “therefore the situation is a really severe one.”

He stated, “We are asking to the media to assist us in the campaign.”

Barrogo, who is now in Manila, stated that he will consider extra measures to be put in place with DA Undersecretary Domingo Panganiban, particularly for backyard breeders where rare cases are detected.

“Our garden provided around 90% of our supply, he remarked.

He continued by saying that commercial and semi-commercial farms have little issues because they can effectively manage their biosecurity procedures.
