The cost of white onions on Tuesday at the ADC-Kadiwa facility in Quezon City has now decreased to PHP150 per kilogram.

This is PHP20 less than the standard price of onions at Kadiwa stores, where they continue to be offered for PHP170/kilo.

The Bonena Multipurpose Cooperative, which supplied about 30 bags of onions, is where the Department of Agriculture (DA) claimed the supply originated.

The cost is in accordance with the DA’s anticipated price range of PHP100 to PHP150 per kilogram after the import application was approved ahead of the busiest harvesting season.

In the meantime, Metro Manila’s standard red onion pricing range is maintained between PHP320 and PHP450.

According to DA deputy spokesperson Rex Estoperez, the cooperative voiced disappointment over the time and volume of importation that had been previously indicated.

“According to them, they oppose the introduction of doon sa due to the timing… Even if the off-season harvest wasn’t lusot, I said that there was still a lot of food to be harvested. They claim that even though we are still in the off-season harvest, there is a large production volume coming in from mid-February through April, and it will continue through May. I believe that mid-February through early May is when the harvest is at its peak, the man remarked.

“But if the onions are coming in from the farmers and producers, then that’s better,” he continued. “But if the onions are coming in from the farmers and producers, then that’s better.”

Estoperez emphasized that only 5,775 metric tons of fresh yellow and red onions will be imported.

“5,000 metric tons are the total amount of the imported goods that are not permitted, according to Kasi. Additionally divided across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, which means that only about 5,000 metric tons of the permitted shipment will arrive. That’s broken down into Mindanao, Visayas, and Luzon, so that’s only a low [volume]),” he remarked.

A kilogram of onions is anticipated to cost between PHP100 and PHP150 once the imported onions arrive in the nation, according to the DA.

Inquiry into onion purchases

The Bonena Multipurpose Cooperative purchased onions for PHP537 per kilogram, however, they were only sold at PHP170 per kilogram at Kadiwa outlets, prompting the Ombudsman to announce that an investigation was planned.

Estoperez added, “We’ll just wait for the formal charges kung meron man (if there are any) and the Ombudsman’s response on our adherence to the order.

Robert Tan, the president of Food Terminal Incorporated (FTI), said he was on leave during the procurement’s selection process at a Senate hearing on Monday, denying any knowledge of the acquisition.

Tan claimed that the Office of the Ombudsman had already contacted him and that he had already responded to any inquiries it had regarding the investigation.
