The Nueva Ecija LGU will start a project to grow onions in pots.
The Talavera municipal council will start a program to encourage locals to plant and cultivate onions in constrained areas, like pots.
In order to launch the “Sibuyas sa Paso” (onions in pots) project in March, the local authority is providing training in eight of these settlements.
The project, according to Mayor Nerito Santos Jr., is a timely effort by the local government to raise public knowledge of the value of cultivating vegetables, particularly given the high price of onions.
“There is no need for big portions of lands because there is something that can be planted and harvested in pots, especially now that the price of onion is too high,” Santos said in an interview. “Kahit sa paso ay mayroong pwedeng itanim at anihin lalo na ang sibuyas na lubhang mataas ang presyo sa kasalukuyan (There is no
According to Vice Mayor Nerivi Santos-Martinez, the project is part of her signature initiative, the “Gulayan sa Barangay, Paaralan at Bakuran Project,” which she began in 2013 while she was the town’s chief administrator.
She said that since then, vegetable farming had become a way of life for the 53 villages that make up this town, and they have been planting in every open space and nook.
The mayor and vice mayor, along with eight village officials, organized an onion seedling planting exercise last month in the town’s greenhouses.
When Santos declared, “If we were to plant in every house, we would not be burdened even if the price was enormous,” he meant that he would not be troubled.
At least 500 hectares of land in this municipality are planted with onions, according to Flordeliza Cuizon, acting municipal agriculturist, although the harvest is not expected to begin until February.
Farmers, according to Cuizon, are hoping to participate in “excellent” prices in some way.
Onion farm gate prices currently hover around PHP300 per kilogram.
