Banawe in QC will replicate Binondo’s Chinese New Year celebrations.

As an alternative to the yearly celebrations in Manila’s Chinatown, Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte and the local Filipino-Chinese community are rallying support for the city’s Chinese New Year event.

Joaquin Co, president of the QC Association of Filipino Chinese Businessmen Inc. (QCAFCBI), and Charles Chen, chairman of the QC Chinatown Development Foundation (QCCDF), described the Chinese New Year celebration on Sunday in Banawe Street as “a good alternative” to the crowded celebrations in Binondo, Manila.

They said that guests may still take in the same attractions as in Binondo, such as float parades, dragon and lion dance performances, fireworks displays, and real Chinese food, but without the associated crowds.

The Chinese Cultural Dance Group, the Philippine Institute of QC Children’s Glee Club, the Philippine Kong Han Athletic Club Lion Dancers, and the Philippine Cultural Chinese 20-piece Orchestra are just a few of the groups that will play during the event.

Shiloh Choy and Shawn Tan, two vocalists who will perform in solos at the event, will add excitement. The Philippine Wushu Colleges and Clubs Association will also hold a wushu show.

Rev. Fr. Wong Seng Tian, a recognized expert in feng shui, will also share his predictions for the Chinese New Year during the event.

Belmonte acknowledged the important contributions made by the Filipino-Chinese community, particularly in the local economy, and reaffirmed his unwavering support for the initiatives.

In a press conference, Quezon City Mayor Belmonte stated, “The Chinese New Year celebration is important for us here in Quezon City because we have a significant Filipino-Chinese community here and this is a very big part of their culture. We would like to give them a chance to express their culture, and we would like to support them as part of our inclusivity policy.”

“We would like to honor the significant economic contributions made by the Filipino-Chinese community to our city. She continued, “We really need to celebrate this momentous anniversary because we want to demonstrate to our Filipino-Chinese brothers and sisters that their contribution is recognized and that they are a significant part of our community. Kailangan na kailangan natin na ipagdiwang ito.”

According to Belmonte, City Ordinance No. 2453-2015 designated the Banawe neighborhood and the city’s Chinatown as official tourist destinations.

From 9 p.m. on Saturday, January 21, to 9 p.m. on Sunday, January 22, portions of Banawe Street, from Cuenco Street up to the area of Quezon Avenue, will be blocked to traffic as part of the festivities to welcome the Year of the Water Rabbit.

The alternative route suggested for motorists is to turn right onto Biak Na Bato Street, left onto Dapitan Street, left onto Cordillera Street, and then back onto Quezon Avenue.

An alternative is for drivers to turn right onto Quezon Avenue, then turn left onto Biak Na Bato Street. Back on Quezon Avenue, turn left onto Maria Clara Street, then right onto D. Tuazon Street.

Director of the Quezon City Police District (QCPD), Brig. Gen. Nicolas Torre III, reassured the populace that there will be sufficient police presence in the region to uphold law and order.

The city administration is urging residents to wear face masks because the Covid-19 threat is still active.
