A group of producers supports importing 450K MT of refined sugar.

The proposed importation of 450,000 metric tons (MT) of refined sugar to stabilize retail prices has received backing from the United Sugar Producers Federation (UNIFED), the largest sugar association in the nation.

According to UNIFED president Manuel Lamata, who is located in this city, “we are totally backing the decision of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to import refined sugar that will hopefully halt runaway retail prices.”

Pablo Luiz Azcona, a board member of the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA), stated on Wednesday that they have prepared an import recommendation for around 450,000MT of refined sugar and are awaiting instructions from Malacaang.

He also said that the intended import volume would be made available for domestic or retail use.

Lamata claimed that the volume, which may range between 400,000MT and 450,000MT, is being discussed with sugar players.

The chief of the sugar sector stated that the amount was “appropriate for buffer stockpiles despite speculation that there would be a shortfall by the conclusion of the milling season,” adding that the SRA should “schedule well the releases of these imported sugar.”

To the detriment of the sugar growers, Lamata continued, this will “guarantee that Millgate prices will not be substantially affected.”

In accordance with Sugar Order No. 2, the UNIFED additionally supported the importation of 150,000MT of entirely refined sugar in September of last year.
