Retailers in Baguio are confident as tourism increases and Panagbenga draws near

Filipino-Chinese businessmen voiced confidence on Thursday that the city’s resurgent tourism industry, which would soon host the Panagbenga Festival, will bring about a cascade of financial advantages for both them and the community.

“We are currently all active again since things are returning to normal. According to reports we have been receiving, businesses will profit from more tourists visiting Baguio if they increase the number of visitors there “In an interview on Thursday, hotelier Peter Ng, president of the Baguio-Benguet Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Baguio Cantonese Association, said.

“There is a lot of kakain in restaurants, therefore such restaurants may gain from the supermarket and palengke. Since more people will eat in restaurants, it is evident that businessmen are more confident than before. These restaurants will get their goods from supermarkets. Therefore, everyone will gain. The confidence of businessmen has increased,” Ng added.

Families of Filipino-Chinese origin who have lived in Baguio for many years are the owners and operators of the city’s most prominent hotels, eateries, and other enterprises.

The average number of tourists arriving each week is 40,000, according to Aloysius Mapalo, the city’s tourism officer, who told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) that the majority of them stay in the nation’s summer capital over the weekends.

“That is currently in style. We anticipate it to peak even more with Panagbenga just around the corner, followed by summer vacation, which is always the event that draws the biggest crowds, “added he.

As the Panagbenga or Baguio Flower Festival officially begins on February 1 and is followed by the summer break and Holy Week, it is anticipated that the number of visitors would increase during the next weeks.

According to Mapalo, after the local government removed the entry requirements, tourism in the area started to increase in March 2022.

“In December, there were a lot of visitors, as usual. While some people were not pleased with the traffic, the business community was eager to have visitors who were aiding in the recovery process, he added. That is retaliation tourism. They missed Baguio, especially with all of the new activities, attractions, and venues that had been added since the pandemic when guests were few.

Mapalo predicted that the city’s tourism industry will rebound in three years, as opposed to the five years that local officials had originally predicted.

Ng, on the other hand, stated that he also anticipates more fortunate events in the Year of the Rabbit.

“Because the pandemic has already slowed down, the Year of the Rabbit marks a positive beginning. Even though it isn’t perfect, it’s still a good beginning. It’s crucial that we continue to think confidently and positively “added he.
