Cebu airport welcomes Taiwan’s inaugural flight

On Tuesday, the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) formally welcomed the first flight from Taiwan’s Taoyuan International Airport.

A cake-cutting ceremony and a water cannon salute were used to send well wishes to travelers leaving for Taipei on the same day by executives from the GMR Megawide Cebu Airport Corporation (GMCAC) and the Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA).

Starlux Airlines started operating daily flights from MCIA to Taipei utilizing a 188-seater Airbus A321neo, with an arrival time at MCIA Terminal 2 of 1:05 p.m. and a departure time of 2:05 p.m. PST for Taoyuan International Airport.

With the addition of this new route in time for the forthcoming Chinese New Year, Starlux Airlines, in accordance with the GMCAC statement, provides customers with more options for visiting Taiwanese tourist destinations.

“The inclusion of Starlux strengthens our dedication to providing our customers with more connections, and the opulent experience that Starlux provides also aids us in introducing more options and improving the passenger experience. We are happy and eager to welcome Starlux within our network, said Rafael Aboitiz, director of the GMCAC.

The expansion of Starlux, according to Julius Neri Jr., general manager and CEO of the MCIAA, is a welcome development for the Cebuano community because it comes at a good moment for the airport’s recovery from the Covid-19 outbreak that paralyzed the tourism industry.

“Starlux Airlines’ Cebu to Taipei service is welcomed to MCIA with great joy and thanks. We now have a way to achieve our objectives of recovery and expanded connectivity thanks to the development of the Starlux route to Cebu,” Neri added.

With its headquarters in Taipei, Taiwan, Starlux is the newest Taiwanese international airline firm. It now flies to 15 destinations, including Manila, Cebu, Bangkok, Singapore, Ho Chi Minh City, Fukuoka, Okinawa, Sapporo, Macau, Penang, and Kuala Lumpur.

With the recently delivered A350-900XWB, Starlux will be able to serve more passengers from Cebu and other Visayas and Mindanao islands who want to travel to North America.

With the advent of this new airline, Mactan Island’s main airport serving Central Visayas now provides connections to 26 internal destinations and 10 international destinations via 14 foreign and four Philippine-based airline partners.
