Blight or favor? AI chatbot makes things difficult for teachers

ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence chatbot that can respond to user inquiries and generate messages in response to textual cues.

When ChatGPT was introduced in November by the San Francisco-based OpenAI, it acquired more than 1 million users in only five days thanks to its in-depth, human-like dialogue responses that questioned faulty premises and provided answers to follow-up inquiries.

Given its powers, it has the power to drastically alter the way we gather information.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Twitter, lauded the software and called it “scary excellent.”

While many experts contend that ChatGPT’s skills can open doors for innovation in a variety of industries, including education, it is important to take into account the difficulties that the AI bot brings for both students and teachers.

One of these difficulties was faced by Darren Hick when he discovered a student using the application to create an essay without using it.

Hick, a philosophy professor at Furman University in the US state of South Carolina, issued a warning that educators should always be on the lookout for cheating and should be mindful of the effects it can have.

“Plagiarism is nothing new, and I don’t believe there will be a significant increase in the number of plagiarists, but I do believe that many students who would plagiarize will turn to ChatGPT and similar AI, he added.

Teachers should “adjust to the realities of ChatGPT,” said Mary L. Churchill, assistant dean for strategic initiatives and community engagement at Boston University and program director for the Higher Education Administration program.

However, some colleges and universities view the tool as a threat, with potentially detrimental effects on student learning, and teachers express worries that ChatGPT can encourage plagiarism and cheating.

In response to the chatbot, US school districts in New York City, Los Angeles, and Baltimore have banned its use on public school networks and devices.

While ChatGPT provides quick answers to questions, according to Jenna Lyle, a representative for the New York City Department of Education, it does not “develop critical-thinking and problem-solving abilities, which are necessary for academic and lifelong success.”

In 2023, Australia’s top Group of Eight institutions made changes to how they would conduct exams, including “a greater usage of pen and paper exams and tests.”

Churchill said that restrictions will not stop students from using ChatGPT, although it is clear that they will likely be circumvented by them.

“To effectively employ this technology in our teaching, we’ll need to come up with new ideas. For instance, Lyle suggested having students use ChatGPT to write the first draft of an assignment before asking them to comment on it.

Great potential for transformation, but adaptation takes time

Hick emphasized that when responding to inquiries, ChatGPT makes factual mistakes.

He also opposed its ban in schools, saying that if a student doesn’t already know the subject, they won’t be able to identify what ChatGPT has gotten right and what it’s gotten incorrect. “Educating pupils about ChatGPT’s limitations is probably more beneficial than merely limiting access,”

Although ChatGPT is a new technology and will need some time to adapt to education, it has already shown that it has a lot of potential for a variety of businesses.

Finding the right way to use technology in the classroom, according to Hick, is a challenge.

Every time I give a student an assignment, I must now consider ChatGPT, but I can also consider how I may use it in the classroom, he added.

“For example, I lecture on the nature of the mind and the age-old debate over whether computers are capable of having brains. Here, ChatGPT increases the bar, and I would be negligent if I didn’t encourage my pupils to experiment with it.”

He went on to say that inventive teachers might find a way to use it in the classroom.

It is a loaded weapon, he added, “but at the same time.”
