In a number of the nation’s rural regions, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) plans to host subscriber identity module (SIM) registration caravans.

Ivan John Uy, the DICT Secretary, said the caravan will stop in 15 locations throughout multiple provinces from Wednesday through Friday during a briefing at the Palace on Tuesday.

The Ilocos Region, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Northern Mindanao, and Davao Region will all be served by the caravan. The locations, most of which would be municipal auditoriums, will be in Ilocos Norte, Cebu, Leyte, Bukidnon, and Davao del Sur, according to Uy.

The SIM registration caravan will stop by Pasuquin Municipal Auditorium in Ilocos Norte, Moalboal Municipal Hall in Cebu, Palo Municipal Gym in Leyte, Pangantucan Municipal Gym in Bukidnon, and Malalag Covered Court in Davao del Sur on Wednesday.

It will take place on Thursday at the basketball court in Atok, Benguet, the Camalaniugan Sports Complex in Cagayan, the covered municipal court in Calumpit in Bulacan, the covered court at Luancing in Batangas, and the covered court at Barangay Arena Blanco in Zamboanga City.

On its third day, the caravan will stop by the Emergency Operations Center in Arakan, Cotabato, Barangay Santa Rosa 1 covered court in Baco, Oriental Mindoro, Barangay Paulba covered court in Ligao City, Albay, Carles covered gym in Iloilo, and Tagbina municipal gym in Surigao del Sur.

He said that the caravan would assist in overcoming the absence of connectivity in these locations that prevent SIM card registration online.

The absence of government-issued IDs presents another difficulty with SIM registration, in addition to the lack of connectivity.

In response, he stated that the government aims to coordinate the registration of SIM cards and the National ID system in more rural areas.

“Right there, at the National ID checkpoint, you may register your SIM card” (Right there, after registering for a National ID, they can also register their SIM card). Consequently, we kill two birds with one stone, he remarked.

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) one-stop shops were previously introduced by the Department of Justice (DOJ), allowing the general people to obtain their NBI clearance for SIM registration.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has also urged local government entities to “exert all efforts” to encourage SIM card usage responsibly, to assist in educating the public about the advantages of SIM registration, and to aid in the entire SIM registration process.

A total of 24,572,555 SIM cards have been registered as of Tuesday, accounting for 14.54 percent of the 168,977,773 active SIMs in the nation.
