City dad views any government ID as verification of senior status for discounts.
Here, a municipal councilor advocates for businesses to accept any government-issued ID as proof of senior citizen identity to receive discounts, rather than simply those granted by the Office of the Senior Citizens Affairs Office (OSCA).
Following allegations that some establishments require a senior citizens ID, Councilor Sedfrey Cabaluna introduced a resolution “strongly asking commercial establishments” to honor alternative IDs during the Sangguniang Panlungsod’s regular session on Wednesday.
“According to the law, any acceptable proof of senior citizen status will do. In order to benefit from discounts, our resolution demands that all government-issued identification be accepted, he stated in an interview.
The idea was instead forwarded to the Committee on Veterans, Retirees, and Elderly for extra research, delaying the resolution’s passage while other council members demanded additional discussion.
Senior people’s experiences and other worries about receiving discounts will be gathered for the study.
Cabaluna stated that they hope to increase awareness that any government-issued ID can be used as status verification by passing the resolution.
There are instances where a person’s senior status is obviously clear, yet they are still unable to take advantage of discounts without an OSCA ID.
We will educate them on the value of returning to senior folks the contributions they made to the community while they were still active contributors to society, according to Cabaluna.
An estimated 34,000 to 35,000 elderly persons are registered with the OSCA in Iloilo City.
