Village urban gardening to improve food security: DILG

To support President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s commitment to secure food sufficiency, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has initiated its urban gardening program in barangays.

The “Halina’t Magtanim ng Prutas at Gulay (HAPAG) sa Barangay” project was introduced on January 24 in Barangay Holy Spirit, Quezon City, according to a statement from DILG Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr.

The program, according to Abalos, is worthwhile since the 42,000 barangays in the nation are perfect for traditional urban farming.

According to him, other practical methods, like aquaponics, can also help with food production in rural areas.

“Combining aquaculture (fish farming) and hydroponics is known as aquaponics (growing plants in a nutrient solution). With the aid of helpful bacteria, plants are grown and fish are raised in aquaponics systems. The practice of planting without soil is known as hydroponics, and in its place, water works to sustain plant life by supplying it with nutrients, water, and oxygen “Added he.

When asked if urban farms would be required in every barangay, Abalos responded that the DILG would monitor the project’s execution over the coming months to assess its impact and advantages.

The project, according to him, intends to increase the ability of barangays for sustainable agriculture initiatives through community gardening in their localities. It will also serve as a strategy to diversify food sources and help to guarantee food security in the nation.

Families and communities will be urged to grow fruits and vegetables in their backyards, other outdoor spaces, and abandoned barangay land as part of the program.
