By collaborating with local government entities, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has intensified its subscriber identity module (SIM) registration drive at the grassroots level (LGUs).

Several mayors have agreed to promote SIM registration by encouraging their constituents and spreading information to communities, according to DICT spokesman and undersecretary Anna Mae Yu Lamentillo.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Lamentillo stated, “Just yesterday (Monday), I met with the Association of Chief Executives of Negros Occidental in the City of Victorias.

She stated that with the program entering its second month, a slowdown in SIM registrations is anticipated, followed by a rush as the deadline of April 26 draws closer.

We have been running a non-stop information campaign to encourage people to sign up right away, she explained.

She stated that assisted SIM registrations in distant areas have begun to help address the anticipated drop, but that it is not anticipated that all 169 million active mobile subscribers will register.

We anticipate that SIM cards used in fraud, cybercrime, and the like won’t be registered, and some subscribers may choose not to register for personal reasons, she added.

Data as of Monday showed that 27,349,056 SIM cards, or 16.19 percent of the 168,977,773 million active users, had already been registered.

In total, Globe Telecom reported 11,160,915 registered SIM cards or 12.7 percent of its 87,873,936 subscribers; Smart Communications reported 14,014,800 registered SIM cards, or 20.61 percent of its 67,995,734 subscribers; and DITO Telecommunity reported 2,173,341 registered SIM cards or 16.58 percent of its 13,108,103 subscribers.
