Rep. Rex Gatchalian of Valenzuela’s 1st District has been appointed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to lead the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

According to a video posted by the Presidential Communications Office, Gatchalian received the oath of office from Marcos on Tuesday during a ceremony at Malacaan Palace in Manila for the position of DSWD secretary (PCO).

The department’s 72nd anniversary of its foundation was being commemorated at the same time Gatchalian took his oath of office.

Since December of last year, the DSWD has been under the direction of officer-in-charge Undersecretary Eduardo Punay after the Commission on Appointments disregarded the ad hoc appointment of former Social Welfare Secretary Erwin Tulfo.

Gatchalian represented Valenzuela City’s first district in the House of Representatives prior to being appointed to the Cabinet position.

He served as the 26th mayor of Valenzuela City as well as a congressman during the 14th and 15th Congresses.

Additionally, he was a member of the boards of various private companies and the president of the Waterfront Hotel and Casinos.

Gatchalian received a bachelor’s degree in political science with honors from George Washington University, as well as certificates in marketing and psychology.

The PCO also mentioned that Gatchalian’s social protection and disaster response initiatives earned notoriety.

By recognizing Gatchalian’s outstanding leadership, Malacaang gave Valenzuela City the chance to win three positions in the top 10 programs honoring outstanding local governance at the 2021 Galing Pook Awards.

The “Valenzuela Live” program for digital earning, the “Tagalag Fishing Village” project for livelihood and eco-tourism, and the “Paspas Permission” online business permit application platform were recognized in 2021 by the Gatchalian-led Valenzuela City government.
