It is “crucial” to change the curriculum to make graduates job-ready.

The K–12 curriculum needs to be changed in order to provide graduates with the skills and competencies that will make them employable, according to the chair of the House Committee on Basic Education and Culture on Wednesday.

Roman Romulo, the committee’s chair and a representative from Pasig City said he supports Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte’s proposal to update the K–12 curriculum in order to ensure that graduates are better prepared for the workforce during the Laging Handa public briefing.

Romulo pointed out that the curriculum is crowded and needs to be pared down to what is really necessary. He also said that it must be in line with the requirements of the companies that will be hiring K–12 graduates.

“Iyon naman po talaga iyong hinahanap – iyong competencies doon, iyong skills doon, iyong talento po, iyong pag-equip po natin, capacity development sa ating mga estudyante. Katulad ng nabanggit ni Vice President Sara, “Mag-uumpisa tayo po tayo In addition, it was stated that the curriculum needed to be adjusted in order for it to be streamlined and to be used as a starting point for the K–12 Filipino curriculum that is desired by the majority of the country’s citizens. Since these are the abilities, skills, and talents that [industries] are looking for. We need to give this to our pupils and develop their skills. Because of this, the curriculum needs to be modified in order to be more streamlined and responsive to the demands of Filipino students seeking employment following grades K–12) “said he.

According to him, parents have been grumbling about the increased financial load brought on by the K–12 system’s unfulfilled promise of work upon senior high school graduation.

“It is stated in the industry that K–12 students are not employed at this time. As a result, it would be appropriate for us to say that we are simple and willing to modify. There is no doubt in our minds that the students who are currently enrolled in K–12 are handa in the jobs that have been specifically tailored for them. The companies have been informing us that they don’t hire K–12 graduates. Therefore, tingin ko naman po iyong nasasabi po na added load po ang two years ay kahit papaano ay unti-unting mawawala iyan. Therefore, this [curriculum] has to be fixed, adjusted, and simplified. We just need to make sure that everything K–12 students study will prepare them for the jobs that are in store for them. I believe that the additional weight of two years would progressively be alleviated if we are successful in doing that “Added he.

Only 10% of SHS graduates were employed, according to the Bureau of Curriculum Development, while 83% continued their studies beyond high school.

Duterte promised to update the K–12 Curriculum “to make them more responsive to our vision as a nation, to generate lifelong learners who are imbued with 21st-century skills, discipline, and patriotism” during the Basic Education Report (BER) 2023 on Monday.

She placed a strong emphasis on seeking the advice of experts, adjusting to regional and global best practices, and making decisions based on facts in order to provide kids with the necessary skills rather than just familiarity.

Then, Duterte urged the private sector to assist the public sector in closing gaps or mismatches between education and employment.

“We appeal to the industry and to companies to accept our students in work immersions and recruit them after they graduate,” she added. “We want to make our graduates employable.”

To address employment mismatch, the DepEd will also collaborate closely with the Commission on Higher Education, Technical Education and Skills Training Authority, and the Skills Training Council.

Romulo reported that House Bill 6572, also known as the proposed Public Schools of the Future in Technology Act (PSOFT) Act, was unanimously adopted by the House of Representatives on its third and final reading.

With the intention of integrating technological advancements and methodologies into the teaching and learning processes, the bill would introduce a PSOFT Program in all public elementary and secondary schools.

To ensure that initiatives and programs are focused on enhancing educational quality through the use of digital technology, a PSOFT Inter-Agency Task Force would be created.

Romulo further emphasized that with 272 yes votes, HB 6574, the proposed Basic Education Mental Health and Well-Being Act, cleared third and final reading.

This policy would support the emotional, psychological, and mental health of students and teachers to improve learning readiness, including student-children in legal trouble, student-students at risk of dropping out, student-victims of violence against women and children, and student victims of other related types of child abuse and criminal acts.
