Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr., head of the Philippine National Police (PNP), praised the Intelligence Group’s (IG) efforts and contributions to upholding national security as the force’s “eyes, ears, and brain

“As the organization’s “brain,” the group is in charge of gathering, analyzing, and synthesizing data in order to give actionable intelligence to our field officers and frontline units. They are the ones that recognize possible dangers and create countermeasures. The team is in charge of the PNP’s intelligence and counterintelligence operations as the organization’s “eyes and ears.” During the IG’s 44th founding anniversary on Wednesday, Azurin said, “They gather information through various means and provide our officers with real-time intelligence about suspects’ and criminals’ activities. This enables the organization to stay ahead of the curve and proactively address potential threats to public safety and security.

The IG is dedicated to this framework and works assiduously for us to realize these objectives, the PNP chief added.

“But more importantly, the subject supports the notion that all citizens’ rights must be respected and protected and that the PNP’s operations must be carried out in line with the law, according to Azurin.

The PNP’s M+K+K=K Peace and Security framework, which stands for “Malasakit + Kaayusan + Kapayapaan = Kaunlaran,” is one of the contexts in which this year’s theme emphasizes the role that intelligence plays in fostering peace, security, and advancement.

“The group is able to better understand the problems these communities are facing, develop strategies to address them, and give them the ability to recognize and react to emerging security threats thanks to the Kasimbayanan program, which promotes collaboration with religious institutions and local communities. As a result, they develop trust with the community they serve,” the top cop in the nation said.

Azurin listed the noteworthy successes of IG in 2022, including the mass surrender of 100 Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) members on July 30, 2022, in Barangay Bangkal, Patikul, Sulu, where it started the neutralization of 255 members of local terrorist groups (LTGs).

Through Case Operations and Intelligence Packets created by Regional Intelligence Units (RIUs) and Operating Divisions (ODs) in full support of Executive Order No. 70, which established the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict, the IG’s ongoing efforts in the campaign against communist figures resulted in the neutralization of 1,947 rebels (NTF-ELCAC).

A German national named Jean Pierre Pacaut, who was on the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s terrorism screening center’s no-fly list, was also blacklisted and deported as a result of the IG’s police operations.

In Lamitan, Basilan on July 31, 2018, a suicide bomber known as Abu Khatir Al-Maghribi/Al-Maghribi, a German-Moroccan citizen, carried out the nation’s first suicide bombing. Pacaut is supposedly affiliated with Al-Qaeda.

In the course of its anti-crime operations, the team detained 1,090 most wanted individuals, 20 of whom had cash rewards totaling more than PHP3 million, 198 additional wanted individuals, 191 criminal organizations, 77 private armed groups (PAGs), 291 on charges of illegal gambling, and 83 on charges of having loose firearms.

Target Intelligence Packets (TIPs), which were provided by the group in the fight against illegal drugs, led to the arrest of 280 drug dealers and the recovery of roughly PHP27 million worth of illegal drugs during anti-illegal drug operations.

The IG, which was established in 1979, has the responsibility of gathering, analyzing, and disseminating intelligence data to assist PNP law enforcement efforts.

The team has developed consistently throughout time to adapt to the shifting security environment and strengthen its capacity to handle new threats.
