As Tokyo and Manila work to improve people-to-people exchanges, Japan is extending visa exemption “primarily for Philippine government employees.”

According to a press release from the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the declaration was made by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida during his summit meeting with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on February 9.

“Visa exemption was announced by Prime Minister Kishida, mostly for Philippine government officials. “The readout noted that President Marcos appreciated Japan’s declaration and emphasized his hope to build on this momentum to further promote people-to-people encounters between the two countries.

The new policy’s specifics have not yet been disclosed by the Japanese side.

During Marcos’ ongoing official visit to Japan, the two countries tried to strengthen their relationship by signing a flurry of agreements covering a variety of topics, including defense and security, agriculture, the economy, and development cooperation.

Marcos is making his first trip to Japan as president.

Kishida also mentioned other instances of collaboration between the Japanese and Philippine law enforcement during the “widespread robbery and fraud cases in Japan,” ostensibly referring to the Luffy case.

Kishida requested “continuous collaboration between authorities” from the Philippines prior to Marcos.

This week saw the deportation of the four suspects in the horrific robberies in Japan, one of which claimed the life of a 90-year-old woman.

While being held in custody at a Manila immigration center, Yuki Watanabe, the alleged mastermind who goes by the nickname “Luffy,” is said to have ordered the break-ins in Japan via an encrypted messaging app.

The request was issued on January 30 by the Japanese Embassy in Manila, and the fast deportation took place less than two weeks later.
