CCC supports legislation limiting the use of single-use plastics

A Senate resolution that seeks to effectively regulate and manage single-use plastics (SUPs) by imposing fines, levies, and incentives for businesses and consumers has the endorsement of the Climate Change Commission of the Philippines (CCC).

According to a press release from the CCC, Senator Loren Legarda’s Senate Bill 246—also known as the “Single-Use Plastics Regulation and Management Act of 2022″—will not only help to phase out and eventually outlaw SUPs in the nation but will also promote the creation and use of more environmentally friendly packaging.

At the opening of the “#PlasticFreeSaSenate” photo exhibit in the Senate in Pasay City, Herrera said, “This legislation, when implemented through a whole-of-nation approach, will give us a fighting shot to achieve the 1.5 survivability limit as discovered by the scientific community.”

Robert Borje, executive director of the CCC and vice chair, acknowledged that challenges related to climate change include the manufacture and usage of plastics, particularly single-use plastics.

Everyone must be aware of the steps that must be taken to effectively minimize, and ultimately eliminate, these plastics because of their detrimental effects on both the environment and human health, according to Borje.

Single-use plastics now in use must be collected, recycled, and disposed of correctly in compliance with the Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act under Senate Bill 246.

The measure also requires government organizations to analyze the effects on the plastic industries that are affected, perform research and development on alternatives to single-use plastics, and create alternative livelihood possibilities for those businesses’ affected employees and workers.

A month-long series of #PlasticFreePilipinas initiatives in the Senate as part of its fight against SUPs began with #PlasticFreeSaSenate.

The exhibit demonstrates how serious the problem of plastic pollution is in this nation.

A zero-waste bazaar, a legislative discussion on waste-to-energy, and the screening of the documentaries “Ang Huling Plastic” and “The Story of Plastic” were all part of the #PlasticFreePilipinas campaign.

These initiatives seek to raise awareness of the need to outlaw SUPs, expose problems with the production of single-use plastics and deceptive solutions, and showcase mainstream zero-waste businesses and initiatives.

The collaborators of the Plastic Free Pilipinas Project, the Climate Change Commission, Oceana Philippines, and the Office of Senate President Pro Tempore Loren Legarda, along with the EcoWaste Coalition, Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives, Mother Earth Foundation, Greenpeace Philippines, and Ocean Conservancy, are putting on the event.
