Very frightening HFMD cases in Negros Occidental

After local cases increased by 6,300%, Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson stated on Monday that he would support the Provincial Health Office’s (PHO) request to declare a hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) outbreak.

“That is actually very concerning. They can offer better guidance on whether to declare an outbreak. They know their stuff. I would have to abide by their decision “He informed the press.

The PHO’s Provincial Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit included suggestions to declare outbreaks in local government units that have met the requirements for epidemics under HFMD in its list of activities done last week.

When an outbreak is declared, according to Lacson, municipal and city health departments should make a greater effort to educate their respective populations about the contagious disease.

“Because young children are most often impacted, we will also inform the Department of Education. They can send pupils home to be isolated if they notice any symptoms “Added he.

According to a surveillance report, 320 cases have already been reported between January 1 and February 4, 2023, up from just five incidents in the first five weeks of the previous year.

In terms of cities, Kabankalan recorded the most instances—73—up from 0 cases the previous year, while Cauayan has the most cases among municipalities—41.

Most of the incidents, according to the research, involve youngsters under the age of ten.

According to Dr. Ernell Tumimbang, the provincial health officer, HFMD cases rise when the transmission is unchecked, which indicates that sufficient isolation is not being used.

He warned that HPV may spread quickly through face-to-face contact, particularly among schoolchildren.

The symptoms of HFMD, a contagious viral infection that frequently affects young children, include mouth sores and rashes on the hands and feet. It is spread through droplets or direct contact with nasal discharges, saliva, feces, and fluid from an infected person’s rashes.
