Toyota’s Tamaraw is being resurrected in the Philippines to support the expansion of the automotive sector.

Alfredo Pascual, secretary of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), has welcomed Toyota’s declaration that it will resume Tamaraw utility vehicle manufacturer in the Philippines.

In an interview with a local radio-television network on Tuesday, Pascual claimed that the restoration of Toyota Tamaraw production in the nation will boost domestic production of cars and car parts as well as promote the industry’s expansion as it recovers from the epidemic.

Atsuhiro Okamoto, president of Toyota Motors Philippines (TMP), announced the company’s PHP4.4 billion investment during President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s recent official business visit to Japan. This investment includes bringing back the Tamaraw local assembly.

The PHP4.4 billion investment, according to TMP Vice President Rommel Gutierrez, will go toward localizing parts and supporting car manufacturing.

Pascual stated that TMP will produce the cab and chassis in addition to assembling the Tamaraw and selling them to different vehicle body makers.

“In this case, it is possible to bend a chassis or cab. The nice thing about it is that they may only sell the cab and chassis; those Philippine businesses who are involved in car assembly would be revitalized, he added.

The project would assist Toyota’s mobility solutions, which were introduced last year, the trade head stated.

Additionally, Gutierrez stated that the new generation Tamaraw, the first Asian utility vehicle released in the 1970s, will be TMP’s Toyota Mobility Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV).

“There is an increase in the market for LCVs, and TMP sees this as an opportunity to give Filipino business owners a more suitable and inexpensive option. The model’s localization will also enable TMP to address the unique conversion demands and requirements of Philippine customers, he said.

In particular, given the end of local production by other original equipment manufacturers, he continued, the introduction of the Toyota Mobility LCV will aid in maintaining local automotive manufacturing.
