This year, the outpatient hemodialysis coverage provided by the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) would increase from 90 to 156 sessions.

PhilHealth President and Chief Executive Officer Emmanuel Ledesma Jr. stated this is a part of their pledge to provide improvements in the benefit packages for 2023 during a media session on Wednesday.

According to Ledesma, “This increase in covered sessions is based on guidelines for proper dialysis, which needs three four-hour sessions each week for patients with Stage 5 chronic renal disease.”

The current 90 sessions may conclude in August or the second semester of the year, according to PhilHealth Senior Vice President Israel Francis Pargas, therefore the organization plans to formally release the new policy before then.

In order to ensure that the 156 [sessions] can be released, he remarked, “we have time till the second semester.” “We hope that we can release the policy by the first or second semester.”

To “achieve improved quality of life,” Ledesma urged worried members to take advantage of various renal replacement therapy (RRT) options.

Due to organ failure, recent injury, and degenerative illness, RRT takes the place of the kidney’s usual blood filtering function.

Hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, hemofiltration, hemodiafiltration, and kidney transplantation are all included.

According to Ledesma, “PhilHealth is giving PHP270,000 in financial assistance to patients who are receiving PD-First, or peritoneal dialysis.”

Additionally, he continued, “PhilHealth provides PHP600,000 for renal patients who are eligible under our Z benefits for kidney transplantation if they have organ donors.
