PH and Japan to increase collaboration on internet infrastructure and cybersecurity

A memorandum of cooperation (MOC) was signed by the governments of Japan and the Philippines to further ICT development and cooperation, particularly in the areas of broadband infrastructure and cybersecurity.
The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) announced on Wednesday that the Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC), which was signed on February 9 between the DICT and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) of Japan, would enable cooperation in the improvement of broadband infrastructure in the Philippines, the diversification of 5G suppliers and the development of the 5G network, as well as the creation of capacity-building programs for cybersecurity.
The MOC will further improve bilateral collaboration for a seamless switch to digital terrestrial television broadcasting and for the use of the emergency warning broadcasting system in the Philippines, according to the DICT.
By streaming content, it would strengthen current areas of collaboration on digital transformation, big data and artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and cultural linkages.
In five years, the two nations will collaborate on collaborative ICT initiatives through the MOC, sharing specialists, delegations, and knowledge about ICT policies, technology, and regulations.
It added: “Liaison with other government agencies, industrial, academic, and professional organizations is also encouraged to promote areas of cooperation.”
Ivan John Uy, the secretary of DICT, commended the MOC’s signing and the development of greater ICT ties with Japan.
As a developing nation, “we are certain to benefit from Japan’s expertise and support, particularly in the sphere of ICT,” said Uy.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. observed the MOC’s signing during his five-day official working visit to Japan from February 8 to 12.
