As part of its cardiovascular health and wellness initiative, the Department of Health (DOH) has opened the province of La Union’s high school and college dance competition to all pupils.

DOH Ilocos area director Paula Paz Sydiongco said in a statement on Wednesday that the campaign would be “piloted in the province of La Union, to promote fitness and healthy food with literature on the importance of physical activity in preventing heart disease.”

The participants should be a mixed-gender team of seven to fifteen people. The dance must be between five and seven minutes long and focus on the event’s topic in its creativity. Explicit gestures, vulgar language, and vulgar language are not permitted. Dance music must not contain harmful or offensive content, although props and other visual-related items may be used.

On February 14, registration for the dancing competition opened.

Anybody interested in signing up can do so online at bit.ly/kaHeartner.

The winning team will earn a monetary award of PHP15,000, while the second-and third-place teams will each receive PHP10,000 and PHP8,000. There will also be a PHP 5,000 consolation prize awarded.

In honor of heart month, the “KaHEARTner Campaign” will formally debut on February 21 at the Saint Louis Colleges Auditorium with the slogan “Move More! Eat Well!” The goal of the campaign is to increase public support for the cause of boosting cardiovascular health and wellness.

According to Sydiongco, a balanced diet should be combined with at least 20 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per week.

We must move our bodies, she continued, because the heart is a muscle that requires regular exercise to stay strong and free from disease.

She also urged everyone to exercise, keep their weight at a healthy level, abstain from vices, and learn how to handle stress.

Since Proclamation 1096 was signed on January 9, 1973, which aims to raise awareness of heart disease as a serious and expanding health concern among Filipinos, February has been designated as Philippine Heart Month.
