SRA to safeguard the wellbeing of sugar farmers: guv

Notwithstanding conflicting views on the most recent importation of 440,000 metric tons (MT) of refined sugar, Governor of Negros Occidental Eugenio Jose Lacson stated on Thursday that he believed SRA officials would preserve the welfare of sugar producers.
He told reporters, “I trust our sugar officials, especially in the SRA, who are made up of Negrenses, will be thinking also about the welfare of our planters, especially the small planters, who are currently the vast majority.
Almost 60% of the nation’s sugar production comes from the top sugar-producing province, Negros Occidental.
There appears to be a conflict on the timing of when it should come in, according to the articles Lacson has read, he claimed.
The governor stated, “I’ve always said what’s crucial is figuring out the correct volume and the time of the importation.
In an effort to lower the high market prices of refined sugar, the SRA issued Sugar Order (SO) No. 6 on Wednesday. This order permits the importation of 440,000 MT of refined sugar.
According to SO 6, which was signed by SRA Acting Administrator David John Thaddeus Alba and Senior Undersecretary Domingo Panganiban of the Department of Agriculture, the nation will import 200,000 metric tons of sugar for consumer use and an additional 240,000 metric tons for buffer stock.
According to SO 6, the remaining 240,000 MT for buffer stock shall not come “earlier” than April 1 while the first batch of 100,000 MT is anticipated to arrive as soon as practicable and the second batch of 100,000 MT is anticipated to arrive before that date.
The province’s and this city’s sugar federations have each released a statement on the importation.
The largest sugar organization in the nation, the United Sugar Producers Federation, has backed the importation of 440,000 MT of refined sugar, whereas the Confederation of Sugar Producers Association and the National Federation of Sugar Planters think the volume is excessive.
