The resolution supporting the production, marketing, and consumption of “Golden Rice,” which is fortified with vitamin A, was passed by the Antique provincial board on Monday during their regularly scheduled meeting.

With the provincial board’s permission, the head of the Regional Office of the Provincial Agriculture (OPA), Nicolasito Calawag, stated in an interview that farmers now have the choice to grow Golden Rice in their rice fields.

According to Calawag, “OPA will immediately begin the cultivation of more Golden Rice seeds for distribution to farmers.”

According to him, the resolution sponsored by Deputy Governor Edgar Denosta is meant to support the pilot project in Antique through advocacy.

In contrast, according to Denosta’s resolve, 73.1 percent of households in Antique are food insecure, 25.9 percent of children under five have stunted growth, and 39.8 percent of children under five are underweight.

Based on the 2019 Expanded National Nutritional Survey of the Department of Science and Technology – Food and Nutrition Research Institute, Denosta claimed that households experience food insecurity as a result of their inadequate consumption to meet their nutritional requirements due to physical unavailability, lack of social or economic access to adequate food, and/or inadequate food utilization.

According to the vice governor, Golden Rice is a novel kind of rice that has been genetically altered to include beta-carotene, a source of Vitamin A, in the grains as a supplemental measure to treat Vitamin A deficiency, a common form of micronutrient deficit.

Dr. Ronan Zagado, the program leader for Golden Rice at the Philippine Rice (PhilRice) Institute and a participant in the session, stated in a previous interview that they began testing the rice variety in Sibalom and Patnongon towns last year during the wet season as a pilot project.

According to Zagado, “We were able to plant on a one-hectare farm in every municipality.”
