On Thursday, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced recommendations on the typical layouts for solar-powered street lighting along major highways.

With the approval of the usage of solar-powered street lights on public works projects, Secretary Manuel Bonoan released the standard design drawings in Department Order (DO) No. 19, series of 2023.

In a statement, he stated, “We hope to use solar-powered roadway lightings in future DPWH projects with street light components considering its stability, long service life, ease of installation, safety, and of course, energy efficiency, making it ideal for use alongside both new and existing roads.”

The DPWH director further stated that in order to prepare design plans for road projects, DPWH Regional Offices, District Engineering Offices, Unified Project Management Office Clusters, and DPWH consultants will refer to the DO 19.

Street lights must be uniform and free from dark bands or abrupt variations. They may be made of high-pressure sodium (HPS) or light-emitting diode (LED) illumination, according to the standards’ technical specifications.

Also, the color temperature can range from warm white to warm yellow, and ultraviolet light is prohibited. The product is suited for outdoor usage and has an IP65 rating from the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

Primary national roads may use single, axial, opposite, or staggered lighting arrangements, secondary roads may use single, opposite, or staggered lighting arrangements, and tertiary roads may use single or staggered lighting arrangements, according to the DPWH.

According to the road classification, width, and number of lanes, the order also determines lamp wattage, mounting height, spacing, and use of polearms, taking into account intersections and merging sections that call for a higher level of illumination to ensure there are enough light sources on the traveled path.
