On Thursday, Senator Robinhood “Robin” Padilla committed to increasing the authority of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) and other state organizations in order to safeguard our children from the illicit material that is widely available on social media.

In a joint session of the Senate Committees on Public Information and Mass Media, Gaming and Amusement, Ways and Means, and Finance, Padilla gave the guarantee while discussing new legislation to expand the authority and powers of the MTRCB and control outdoor and internet media.

The purpose of the hearing, according to him, is to ensure that “we lead our children who are exposed to shows and audiovisual media in many modes and platforms.” He added that organizations like the MTRCB need to have stronger resources to combat movie piracy.

Padilla further pointed out that, after 38 years of existence, the MTRCB’s mandate and capacities have become obsolete in the age of the internet and online gaming.

He did, however, make it clear that the suggested procedures should ensure that directors’ creative freedom will not be restricted.

Padilla also stated that they do not seek to censor information and do not oppose freedom of speech; rather, they aim to promote intelligent viewing and shield viewers from immoral and unlawful material, especially those which can endanger the honor and name of our nation.
