DOT extends “free accreditation” for businesses engaged in tourism

The Department of Tourism (DOT) is continuing to exempt tourism businesses from paying accreditation costs.

The action, according to Christina Garcia Frasco, secretary of tourism, will aid in the recovery of tourism businesses from the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Presidential Proclamation No. 57 s. 2022, which further extended the duration of the state of calamity in the Philippines to December 31, 2022, provides the foundation for DOT’s Memorandum Circular 2022-001.

The DOT discerns the necessity to maintain, for as long as necessary, measures that will support our partners in their process of recovering from the tragic losses sustained in the nearly three years that the tourism industry was brought to a standstill owing to the epidemic, Frasco added.

The memorandum also includes key elements that the department matched with the recommendations of the Inter-Agency Task Group for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases of the national government, in addition to the waived accreditation fees.

Streamlining the documentation needed for accreditation is one of them, as is doing virtual inspections rather than physical ones.

Frasco did point out that several of the clauses in the memo circular that the agency issued on March 24, 2022, had been updated.

By the end of the next month, the DOT hopes to resume accepting new Star Rating and Premium Accreditation applications, which were put on hold due to Section 6 of the memorandum circular.

The DOT advises businesses whose basic registration is about to expire to seek regular accreditation instead.

With the DOT’s online accreditation system, accessible at https://accreditation.tourism.gov.ph/login, tourism establishments may submit an application for accreditation online.
