TikTok is forbidden on all official devices in Canada.

For security reasons, Canada banned TikTok from all government devices on Monday. According to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, this might be the beginning of a larger crackdown.

On Monday, immediately after the ban was announced, Trudeau told reporters, “This may be a first step, it may be the only step we need to take, but we’re going to be making sure that we’re keeping Canadians safe at every step of the road.”

He added, “Clearly, we take the freedom of expression and the freedom of Canadians to engage online extremely seriously. Yet we also uphold very fundamental values about the security and safety of Canadians as well as the privacy of their personal information.

Employees at Foreign Affairs Canada were informed via email that the chief information officer of the nation has decided to prohibit the video-sharing platform app.

Tuesday marks the start of the prohibition.

Concerns were raised concerning ByteDance, the technology company based in Beijing that owns TikTok, giving the Chinese government access to the personal user data on the app.

The action follows a TikTok investigation that was revealed by the authorities last week.

The app “presents an unacceptable level of danger to privacy and security,” according to the investigation’s findings, said Mona Fortier, president of the Treasury Board, in a statement.

She did, however, emphasize that there is currently no proof that sensitive government data has been stolen.

The restriction in Canada is a precedent set by other governments. The app has been outlawed by the European Commission and European Council, and the majority of American federal employees are also prohibited from using it on their work phones.

A bill to outlaw TikTok nationwide is being studied by the US Congress.
