The Japanese Embassy in Manila said on Wednesday that the Japanese government is sending a disaster response team to assist the Philippines in stopping a rapidly growing oil spill in the province of Oriental Mindoro.

Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Kazuhiko Koshikawa announced that Japan would dispatch an oil removal and control disaster relief expert team in conjunction with the Filipino government to assist ongoing efforts to address the oil spill in Oriental Mindoro.

He continued, “We are one with you in these tough times.

The squad, according to the envoy, will be made up of Japan Coast Guard oil control specialists.

The MT Princess Empress, carrying 800,000 gallons of industrial oil, capsized last February 28 off the shore of Naujan village in Oriental Mindoro.

According to estimates from the University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute, the oil slick may harm up to 20,000 hectares of coral reef, 9,900 hectares of mangroves, and 6,000 hectares of seagrass.

According to the institute, it will take over a week for the spill to approach the northern Palawan mainland.

The King Fisher Reserve, St. John the Baptist Marine Sanctuary, Song of the Sea Fish Sanctuary, Stella Mariz Fish Sanctuary, Bacawan Fish Sanctuary, St. Peter the Rock Fish Sanctuary, and San Isidro Labrador Fish Sanctuary are among the Marine Protected Areas in the municipality of Pola in Oriental Mindoro that have already been affected by the slick, according to the Department of Tourism.
