18 containers of falsely claimed red and yellow onions worth PHP77 million have been seized by customs officials.

The inspection of the containers at the Manila International Container Port (MICP) on March 10 was directed by Commissioner Bienvenido Rubio, according to a statement released by the Bureau of Customs (BOC) on Monday.

The Customs Intelligence and Investigative Service-MICP Field Office requested that the subject shipments be physically examined, according to the bureau, which then requested the inspection.

Arnoldo Famor, the MICP District Collector, also saw the inspection.

It surfaced that the pizza dough pieces were allegedly used to disguise the agricultural items.

“The BOC shall continue to maximize its intelligence resources and capabilities and intensify enforcement measures against dishonest importers and their cohorts to combat smuggling attempts, especially those involving agricultural goods which are detrimental to our local farmers and businesses,” the BOC chief said.

It continued that the shipments, which are believed to contain pizza dough and fishballs, are covered by a number of bills of lading and different commodities declarations.

The pizza dough pieces, according to Deputy Commissioner for Intelligence Juvymax Uy, were in violation of Republic Act (RA) 9711 or the Food and Pharmaceuticals Act of 2009 since they lacked the necessary license and permit from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

As a result of the shipments’ violations of Section 1400 in relation to Section 117 of RA 10863, also known as the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA), RA 9711, and the Department of Agriculture (DA) Circular No. 04 Series of 2016, the BOC then issued warrants of seizure and detention (WSD) against them.
