86 more youths and children who tested HIV-positive in January: DOH

In January, there were 86 new cases of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among children and adolescents, according to the Department of Health (DOH).

The organization highlighted the figure is among the 1,454 people whose HIV status was confirmed during the month in its most recent data record, which was made public on Monday.

About 79 of the 86 cases ranged in age from 10 to 19, and seven involved young children under the age of nine.

Except for one instance where the mode of transmission is unknown, sexual contact is the primary method of HIV transmission in cases involving adolescents.

Children of infected mothers make up the majority of acquired cases, who range in age from 2 to 9 years old.

About eight of the remaining 39 confirmed cases are between the ages of 15 and 24, 22 are between the ages of 25 and 34, eight are between the ages of 35 and 49, and one case is between the ages of 50 and older.

Since 1984, there have been 110,736 HIV cases documented nationwide, with 6,383 deaths.

To address the increasing number of HIV cases in the nation, the DOH and the Philippine National AIDS Council created action plans in January.

The 7th AIDS Medium Term Plan, which was previously created and emphasizes the five strategic pillars of the master plan: Prevent, Treat, Protect, Strengthen, and Sustain, was harmonized with the plans prepared by the DOH and the PNAC.
