Bulacan will obtain 76K bags of certified inbred rice seeds from DA
The delivery of certified inbred seeds to farmers in the province of Bulacan will soon begin thanks to the Department of Agriculture’s (DA) Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (RCEF).
According to Justine Ragos, the RCEF’s provincial coordinator, the province has been awarded more than 76,000 bags of 20-kilos-per-bag certified inbred rice seeds for the wet season, which runs from April to August with a peak from June to July.
The NSIC Rc 160, Rc 218SR, and Rc 222 are among the seed varieties that Ragos claimed will be distributed by DA-Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice).
According to actual field research and demonstrations carried out by PhilRice, certified inbred rice seeds yield more than regular seeds and are resistant to a variety of rice diseases.
“The DA-PhilRice and its partners have already engaged with the province, city, and municipal agricultural agencies to set down the planned initiatives for our palay farmers,” he added in a statement.
He added the DA-PhilRice is thankful to the local government units in Bulacan for their continued implementation of the RCEF Seed Program.
Over 4.27 million certified inbred rice seeds will be distributed nationwide by the DA-PhilRice, expanding the program’s scope from 42 to 77 provinces across the nation’s rice-producing regions.
The certified inbred rice seed distribution, which is jointly funded by the RCEF Seed Program and the DA’s National Rice Program (NRP) with PHP3 billion and PHP700,000, respectively, is meant to supplement and support the hybrid rice production strategy of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. under his food security agenda.
The allotment can plant 1.97 million hectares in 1,319 cities and municipalities nationally during 2023 wet to 2024 dry cropping season, according to Dr. Flordeliza Bordey, director of the RCEF Program Management Office at DA-PhilRice.***
