DILG chief: Promote BIDA anti-drug initiative at barangay meetings

According to Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr. on Sunday, representatives of the nation’s 42,046 villages must hold meetings to rally support for the government’s anti-drug campaign.

Abalos was alluding to the “Buhay Ingatan, Droga Ayawan” (BIDA) program, a national anti-drug campaign that focuses more on community rehabilitation and demand reduction in its fight against illegal substances.

He advised officials to use the barangay assemblies scheduled for this month to thoroughly explain the program to their citizens and turn them into BIDA supporters.

“We call on them to use Barangay Assembly Day to inspire their residents to become BIDA advocates and join our campaign against illegal drugs,” Abalos said in a statement.

The assembly, according to the interior minister, would be a chance to interact with the locals and inform them of the government’s desire to work with them to battle illegal substances.

We ask our fellow citizens to support us in strengthening and making our campaign more effective by taking part in our upcoming BIDA activities, he continued. “Hiling natin na tulungan tayo ng mga kababayan hanggang sa mga barangay upang mas lumakas pa at maging epektibo ang ating kampanya,” he said.

Abalos reminded local government entities to hold Barangay Assembly Days each semester as required by the Local Government Law under Memorandum Circular No. 2023-032.

Barangay Assembly Day this semester with the theme “B-BIDA KA! It is possible to hold Barangay BIDA Ka sa Pagpapatupad ng Kapayapaan, Pangangalaga ng Kalikasan, at Pagpapaigting ng Pagkakaisa Tungo sa Isang Ligtas, Mapayapa, Maunlad at Masaganang Pamayanan on any Saturday or Sunday in March.

It can be used in blended mode or face-to-face (face-to-face and online).

Cavite’s “BIDA”

The Cavite provincial administration, DILG, Cavite Police Provincial Office, and Cavite Provincial Advisory Committee hosted the BIDA conference at the Imus Sports Complex on Saturday.

The war against drugs, according to Pastor Ephraim Segovia, director of the Calabarzon Fight Against Drugs, is the longest one the nation has ever fought and is still engaged in.

He demonstrated the graphic bodily ramifications of consuming illegal narcotics with an audio-visual presentation.

Felicito Valmocina, DILG Undersecretary for Barangay Affairs, reaffirmed the importance of the youth sector in advancing the nation.

In his remarks, Valmocina urged the audience to join the government’s ongoing battle on drugs by simply educating others about the benefits and drawbacks of taking and abusing illegal narcotics.

The provincial government is distributing information kits, pamphlets, and posters while “Ugnayan sa Barangay” (Connection with Villages) conversations debate rehabilitation programs, according to Cavite police director Col. Christopher Olazo.
