Carlito Galvez Jr., the director of the Department of National Defense (DND), stated that the government would enlist the assistance of the nation’s allies and partners to lessen the negative impacts of the oil spill brought on by the M/T Princess Empress’s capsize off the coast of Naujan, Oriental Mindoro.

In a statement on Tuesday night, he said that this also includes the knowledge and technical assistance of other allies and partners, such as France and the United Kingdom.

Galvez, who is also the chair of the NDRRMC (National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council), emphasized that they are in control of the situation.

The local government units (LGUs) in Oriental Mindoro and the DND, via the NDRRMC, have increased government efforts to promptly address the effects of the oil spill from the sunken M/T Princess Empress, the speaker continued.

The head of DND added that US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to helping with the oil spill management.

A US humanitarian assistance and disaster response (HADR) team is currently en route, he added.

On the other side, the US was specifically requested for oil spill booms by the Philippine Coast Guard. These booms will help confine the oil spill in order to safeguard the environment and aid in recovery, pending the President’s approval to accept the equipment, Galvez added.

A remotely controlled vehicle or underwater robot equipped Japanese dynamic positioning ship, the Shin Nichi Maru, has arrived at Naujan, Oriental Mindoro.

When it sank on February 28 of last year, the M/T Princess Empress was carrying 800,000 liters of industrial fuel oil.

Galvez added that the provincial administration of Oriental Mindoro is also dedicated to giving the personnel carrying out offshore control measures their daily necessities, including meals, medications, and vitamins.
