DOT increases data collection on tourism in Eastern Visayas

The Department of Tourism (DOT) has intensified efforts to equip local tourism officers with the knowledge and skills necessary for compiling and submitting fundamental tourist statistics.

Karina Rosa Tiopes, regional director of DOT 8 (Eastern Visayas), stated on Thursday that it is still very difficult to get a comprehensive picture of tourism arrivals in the region through the collection of tourism statistics.

These statistics take into account both daytime and nighttime visitors, receipts, and the precise locations they have visited.

“We don’t have the exact number, but there is an increase in tourism arriving in 2022 compared to 2021. Statistics from regional tourism offices are still being processed. The various forms of submission are among the most challenging aspects. Some figures are submitted as PDF copies, so we have to encrypt the data and do analyses, Tiopes told the press.

For the first stage of strengthening the capability of the local tourism statistics system, the DOT assembled tourism officers this week.

Participants include the tourist directors of the provinces of Leyte, Biliran, and Eastern Samar as well as the tourism directors of the cities of Maasin, Tacloban, Baybay, and Calbayog.

Municipal tourism officers from the provinces of Samar, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte, and Biliran will also be participating.

“Statistics is a crucial subject because it enables us to comprehend the broad trends and patterns present in every data collection. It can be applied to data analysis and conclusion-making. Additionally, it can be applied to forecasting future actions and events, according to Tiopes.

She clarified that in addition to providing information about the demographics of visitors, statistics on tourism might aid in developing marketing plans for local governments’ goods and services as well as determining if a policy is effective.

The DOT anticipates a sharp rise in visitor numbers in 2022 and this year, partly as a result of fewer travel restrictions following the outbreak.
