During Holy Week, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is on high alert to increase safety in the nation’s ports and waterways.

PCG Commandant, CG Admiral Artemio Abu, issued a statement on Friday declaring a heightened alert from April 2 to April 10 in order to improve port and waterway security through the use of additional security personnel, K9 units, medical teams, harbour patrollers, vessel inspectors, and deployable response groups.

This is to “intensify the presence of the PCG in port passenger terminals and the country’s waters to monitor maritime traffic,” Abu said.

at order to provide a quick reaction to incidents, first aid and rescue equipment facilities will be established at popular tourist destinations.

“To ensure that tourists have a safe vacation, we made sure that our lifeguards and other first responders deployed in beaches, island resorts, and other maritime tourism spots, particularly in the Visayas and Mindanao, are well-trained.

Jaime Bautista, the secretary of transportation, gave the PCG the mandate to coordinate with the Maritime Industry Authority and the Philippine Ports Authority to handle maritime transport facilities at this time.

The Department of Transportation’s maritime division built more port terminal facilities to ensure that passengers had a comfortable trip and to handle unfortunate events.

The PCG has collaborated with the Philippine National Police, local governments, and the Armed Forces of the Philippines to secure the general public in all transportation hubs during the summer.

Earlier, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority announced that from April 3 to 6, a multi-agency command centre would be established at its Metrobase to track the status of important transportation hubs, particularly bus terminals.

Prior to the anticipated rush of travellers over the holy week, an inter-agency terminal examination will also be carried out.
