PCG asks the international fund for assistance with the Mindoro oil disaster
The International Oil Pollution Compensation Funds (IOPCF) has been enlisted by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) to support the nation’s cleanup efforts following the oil spill off the coast of Naujan town in the province of Oriental Mindoro.
The PCG stated in a statement on Friday that funding from the International Oil Pollution Compensation Funds (IOPCF), which is made up of the 1992 Fund and the Supplementary Fund, two intergovernmental organisations that offer compensation for oil pollution damage brought on by tanker oil spills, would hasten the acquisition of remotely operated vehicles. (ROVs).
The Japanese Dynamic Positioning Vessel Shin Nichi Maru previously utilised the ROV Hakuyo to find the submerged MT Princess Empress and discovered that all eight of its compartments were dripping with engine oil.
P&I London, a consortium of protection and indemnity insurance companies for mutual marine insurance that represents international ship owners, was also contacted by PCG Admiral Artemio Abu for assistance.
The arrival of the Korean Coast Guard Response Team and technical experts on March 28 was previously announced during a meeting with Abu by the Korean Minister Jong Soon Chang and Third Secretary Kim Dosik.
Additionally, South Korea has promised to deliver a 1,000-meter spill boom, 2,000 pieces of safety gear, and 20 tonnes of absorbent pads by the first week of April.
