PBBM to PNA: Fight false information to give citizens more authority

On Friday, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. urged the Philippine News Agency (PNA) to use its position to fight false, misleading, and malicious information in order to empower and inform the public.

The President made the call while he participated in the 50th anniversary celebration of the government’s newswire service.

In his speech, Marcos emphasised the need for the PNA to inform the Filipino people on government policies, programs, and initiatives.

Use your platforms to encourage healthy participation in public dialogue and to raise citizens’ awareness of their responsibility in the battle against all kinds of false information, disinformation, and malinformation, Marcos said.

As he congratulated the PNA on its golden anniversary, Marcos noted the news organisation’s efforts to carry out its mission of providing Filipinos with “timely, reliable, and accurate news.” He added that this significant milestone is a “testament” to the PNA’s “relentlessness” in serving the public.

He expressed the expectation that the PNA, as the official news outlet of the government, will contribute to the creation of a “more just and empowered nation” in the Philippines.

He said, “May you also keep making discoveries, inspiring tales, and instructional materials that will help our people lead fruitful and meaningful lives.

Happy 50th anniversary to the Philippine News Agency once more, he continued.

On March 1, 1973, the Department of Public Information (DPI) Secretary and subsequently Senator Francisco S. Tatad issued a special order that established the PNA.

It was started as the DPI’s old Bureau of National and Foreign Information’s news division.

From among the old stringers for the Philippine News Service (PNS), who at the time only covered the country’s 60 cities and 70 provinces, the first PNA journalists were selected.

The PNS was founded in October 1950 and is the first privately owned news organisation in the nation.

The PNA has moved at least six times in the past 50 years because it doesn’t have a building of its own. The first was from the NPC Building to the nearby UPL Building in front of Fort Santiago (1978–1981); the second was from the NPC Building to the Office of Media Affairs on Bohol Avenue in Quezon City (1983–1987); the third was from the Office of Media Affairs back to the NPC Building (1988–1996); and the fourth was to its current location on the second floor of the Philippine Information Agency Building at the Media Center on Visayas Avenue in Diliman, Quezon City.

The PNA is currently a part of the News and Information Bureau, run by Assistant Director Lee Ann L. Pattugalan and Director Raymond Robert C. Burgos. Demetrio B. Pisco Jr., the executive editor, and Luis A. Morente, the deputy executive editor, support them.
