SSS is promoting green energy and installing solar panels in offices.

The Social Security System (SSS) intends to put solar panels in its buildings in order to reduce electricity costs and encourage the use of green energy.

SSS president and chief executive officer Rolando Ledesma Macasaet stated in a press release on Tuesday that the organization plans to install 445 solar panels with a combined 200-kilowatt peak at its main office in Quezon City.

After this project is finished, the company expects to create an average of about 18,872 kilowatt-hours per month, saving the country PHP200,798.08 each month and reducing its carbon footprint by 9.57 tonnes, the same as planting 57.4 trees, he said.

The Philippine Development Plan (PDP) for 2023–2028 was approved and adopted by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s Executive Order No. 14, which was released on January 27.

The plan integrates the Marcos administration’s 8-point Socioeconomic Plan in order to reduce energy costs and support renewable energy sources.

In addition to its main headquarters, the agency intends to install solar panels in SSS-owned branches across the country, particularly in regions with a high cost of electricity and frequent power outages.

According to Macasaet, “We will adopt and implement measures to strengthen the SSS fund through prudent spending and operational efficiency while advocating for the protection of the environment. This is in addition to our continued pursuit of providing meaningful social security protection to the current and future generations of SSS members and their families and the improvement of our services.

Managing and reducing the negative effects of its operations on the environment are priorities for the SSS, he continued.

It has previously launched a number of economical and environmentally friendly initiatives, such as digitalizing its operations through its online portals, My.SSS and the SSS mobile app, give members easier, quicker, and more convenient ways to complete their transactions while lowering their carbon footprint through paperless processing and strict adherence to green procurement.

The SSS received a rating of 94 percent from 2007 to 2009 from the Department of Energy’s National Energy Efficiency Program and Conservation Program in Government Buildings, making it one of the most energy-efficient government buildings.
