Telcos demand that SIM registration be extended.

Many mobile subscribers have yet to register for a SIM card despite the April 26 deadline, thus the telecommunications companies (telcos) have urged the government to extend the deadline.

The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) will receive a formal letter of request from Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) and TNT on Thursday asking for the deadline to be extended.

First vice president of PLDT-Smart Cathy Yang stated, “We are filing this request to help give ample time to all mobile users, particularly the marginalized sectors and those located in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas of the country, to register their SIMs.”

According to Yang, around 46% of current Smart and TNT mobile users have registered their SIMs.

She stated that SIM registration booths have been set up in rural regions across the nation in partnership with the DICT, NTC, and other governmental organizations to assist those who lack an internet connection in registering.

“These booths offer information and guidance on how to register Smart or TNT SIMs using acceptable ID cards, as well as provide physical assistance to senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and those using non-data phones,” the spokeswoman stated.

Globe Telecom Inc. (Globe), on the other hand, joined the request for a delay because fewer than 50% of its active consumers had registered their SIM cards.

According to Globe, a large number of mobile subscribers have not registered their SIM cards because they lack a valid government identification (ID) and a working knowledge of the internet.

Given these problems, the company urged the government to extend the SIM registration period so that its users would have more time to obtain the necessary government IDs and provide the necessary data on the website.

It requested that government officials take into consideration providing alternative IDs such as company IDs, school IDs, and barangay certificates for people without genuine government-issued IDs in order to enhance the number of registrations.

Allowing “conditional registration” or letting people continue using their SIM card while they work on getting a legitimate ID is another choice, the statement stated.

Additionally, it asked for the establishment of government-assisted registration facilities that are “always on” and offer ID issuance services.

In order to ensure that we register as many users as possible before the April 26 deadline, Globe said it was working closely with the National Telecommunications Commission, pertinent governmental organizations, and other stakeholders.

The Republic Act (RA) 11934, often known as the SIM Registration Act, controls the usage of SIM cards in an effort to stop the spread of SMS scams and other criminal activities made possible by mobile phones.

All SIM users must register their SIMs in their names by April 26, 2023, or risk having their SIMs deactivated.
