Due to a single case that was reported between the months of January and February of this year, Iloilo City has experienced a measles outbreak.

“A 28-year-old male from Jaro has had measles so far this year in Iloilo City. Dr. Maria Jennifer Anceno, the coordinator of the national immunization program, stated in a press conference on Thursday that the inquiry revealed there was no transmission of the sickness within the home and among his close contacts.

According to her, even one measles case can result in the declaration of an outbreak.

She said, “Typically, the country conducts supplemental immunization when an outbreak is announced.

During the month-long Measles-Rubella and Oral Polio Supplemental Immunization Activity (MR OPV SIA) in this city, which aims to vaccinate 95% of target children aged 9 to 59 months for the measles-rubella (MR) vaccine and 0 to 59 months for the oral polio vaccine (OPV), Anceno confirmed the outbreak.

Even if the city didn’t meet the objective in 2019 or 2021, the medical officer was confident they could do so this year.

They will visit each home to persuade the parents to participate in this exercise, she said.

The city wants to vaccinate 37,367 kids against measles-rubella and 43,664 against oral polio.

Approximately 89.47 percent of the 41,947 MR cases in 2019 and 82 percent of the 37,647 cases in 2021 received the vaccine.

Out of 43,994 people, 81 percent had the OPV vaccine in 2021.

The success rate for the MR vaccination in 2019 and 2021 was 89.47 percent and 82 percent, respectively, whereas the success rate for the oral polio vaccine was 81 percent.

Anceno claims that vaccination is both secure and efficient.

On April 28, there will be a formal launch for the MR OPV SIA, but the actual operation won’t begin until any time between May 2 and May 15, 2023.
