DOH will immunize 935K kids in Ilocos against polio and measles

Over 935,130 children in the Ilocos Region under the age of five will receive the measles, measles-rubella, and polio vaccines simultaneously through the Department of Health’s Center for Health Development in the Ilocos Region (DOH-CHD-1).

On Friday, DOH-CHD-1 medical officer Dr. Rheuel Bobis stated that of the total population, 431,162 are the target for the measles and measles-rubella vaccination and 503,968 are the objective for oral polio, from May 2 to 30.

According to him, 262,944 youngsters in Pangasinan, 16,162 in Dagupan City, 60,026 in La Union, 50,285 in Ilocos Sur, and 41,745 in Ilocos Norte will receive measles and measles-rubella vaccinations.

He noted that of the overall target population for oral polio, 307,548 are in Pangasinan, along with 18,915, 70,080 in Dagupan City, 58,440 in Ilocos Sur, and 48,985 in Ilocos Norte.

According to Bobis, the local government units (LGUs) will put up their immunization sites, among other places, in their city health offices and rural health units.

He stated, “Some LGUs will have their mobile vaccination staff to reach those who cannot go to the vaccination sites.” “Ibang LGUs ay magkakaroon ng mobile vaccination staff para ‘yong mga di makakapunta ay mabibigyan ng bakuna,” he said.

He continued by saying that the only way to protect kids from these diseases is through immunization.

“It is a free-for-all bakuna with an objective of mabakunahan ang 95% ng mga bata edad 5 pababa. Sila man ay nakatanggap na ng bakuna at hindi pa (This vaccination is free, and we aim to immunize 95% of children under the age of five). Regardless of whether they have already had the immunization,)” Bobis said.

He said that the effort is intended to stop a measles outbreak in the area.

There is still no evidence of a measles outbreak, but this is being done to stop it in the upcoming days and months. “Wala pang indikasyon na may measles outbreak pero para maiwasan sa mga susunod na arw o buwan isasagawa ang catch-up vaccination para sa mga nakamissed,” the statement reads. Therefore, in order to protect the community and individuals who missed out, we are administering the catch-up immunization.

In order to prevent a future measles outbreak, he continued, the region’s vaccination rates for measles, measles-rubella, and polio are still at 50 to 60 percent when they should be 95 percent.

“They don’t have access to measles vaccines because of the pandemic and restrictions,” he stated.

In addition to the vaccinations, the children will receive a Vitamin A supplement to help with their vision.

Measles, rubella, and measles are contagious illnesses that can be avoided but, if left untreated, can result in serious health problems or even death.

Children who have polio could have major birth abnormalities or possibly pass away.
