In order to reach at least 95% of the goal for the measles and polio vaccinations in May, the Department of Health (DOH) has been assembling local government representatives and healthcare professionals throughout the Eastern Visayas region.

Key DOH regional leaders have met with mayors, local health officials, village health workers, and other officials over the past three days to onboard regional stakeholders for the fight against measles-rubella and polio.

The DOH regional office issued a statement on Friday stating that “the onboarding aims to emphasize the huge role that local chief executive plays in the vaccination campaign, which targets to immunize children aged 0-59 months old.”

“Achieving the 95 percent target vaccination coverage for 2023 requires a whole-of-society and whole-of-government approach. As a result, the participation of our local leaders is a noteworthy indication of their unwavering commitment to the success of the campaign, according to the department.

In its month-long immunization campaign, DOH in Eastern Visayas plans to give oral polio and measles vaccines to more than a million kids.

The program will cover 550,559 kids aged 0 to 59 months for polio and 471,472 kids aged 9 to 50 months for measles.

One of the most contagious diseases in the world is measles. It is characterized by high-grade fever, rashes, coughing, itchy eyes, and runny nose, and it can result in complications like pneumonia, blindness, severe diarrhea, brain swelling, and even death.

On the other hand, polio is a potentially crippling illness that results in fever, stiff neck, and muscle weakness, and can ultimately cause permanent paralysis.

According to the DOH, there is no specific therapy for either measles or polio, and vaccination is the only proven method of prevention.
