Malaria still present in Palawan: DOH

Malaria, a potentially fatal condition brought on by parasites that are spread to people by the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes, is still present in about 95 barangays in Palawan.

The only province that was not proclaimed malaria-free in 2022, according to Department of Health Officer in Charge Maria Rosario Vergeire, was Palawan, she stated in a media briefing on Tuesday.

“Where we have about 3,207 cases of malaria, and these are indigenous cases,” she said. “Kung saan mayroon tayong ng malaria diyan.” “There are currently 66 provinces without malaria. By 2030, we intend to eradicate malaria from the world.

The instances are concentrated in the southern part of Palawan, according to a report made in February by Dr. Gerald Belimac, chief of the DOH Standards and Strategy Division.

In addition to awareness programs, the DOH still conducts case investigations, mosquito species surveillance, targeted testing and treatment, and targeted anti-malarial medicine administration, according to Belimac.

“By 2027, dapat ay ma-monitor na at makita natin na wala na dapat talagang kaso sa (we must monitor, and we must see zero cases) Palawan in those three years before 2030,” Vergeire stated.

Even though malaria is lethal, it may be treated and prevented, she continued.

In 2021, there were 619,000 malaria-related fatalities and 247 million infections, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The most vulnerable age group to malaria is children under 5, who in 2021 made up about 80% of all malaria deaths in the WHO African Region.
