Poe claims that the SIM registration law protects the right to privacy.

On Tuesday, a lawmaker reaffirmed that Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) Registration Law, also known as Republic Act (RA) 11934, protects customers’ right to privacy and shields them from text fraud and other online crimes.

Senator Grace Poe, who was the measure’s sponsor until it was passed last year, made the remark in response to a Supreme Court appeal that claimed the law violated people’s rights to privacy and freedom of speech.

Poe said in a statement that “the law has instituted sufficient safeguards that will vouch for consumers’ right to privacy while ensuring a safe and secure mobile use.”

It is perilous for the public to give the government and telecommunications firms (telcos) their personal information, according to the organization Junk SIM Registration Network, which petitioned the Supreme Court (SC) for a temporary restraining order on the law’s implementation.

Along with other organizations, the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines questioned the validity of RA 11934.

Poe stated that she respects the SC’s procedures for considering the petition.

The Supreme Court’s magistrates’ combined judgment currently determines how the SIM Registration Law will turn out, according to Poe.

The first bill that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. signed into law, RA 11934, attempts to combat text- and online-based scams.

Beginning on December 27, a 180-day SIM card registration may be extended.

Sim cards that are currently in use but weren’t registered during the sign-up period will be deactivated, while new cards require registration when they are bought.

The Department of Information and Communications Technology reports that, as of April 7, just 62.2 million, or 36.79 percent, of all SIM cards sold have been registered, three weeks before the April 26 deadline.

On October 10, 2022, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. enacted RA 11934 to stop the spread of text messaging scams throughout the nation.
