Iloilo City confirms toddler’s dengue-related death

The City Health Office (CHO) at this location is now validating a report on the potential dengue death of a two-year-old girl, which might bring the total number of dengue fatalities in this location in the first quarter of 2023 to three.

Even with the reported deaths, cases in the city are falling, according to Dr. June Frances Umani, the Iloilo CHO’s coordinator for Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases (EREID).

“This death was most likely caused by dengue. If confirmed, we would have had three deaths as of April, she said in an interview, adding that there was no need for concern because the illnesses had not all originated from one location and there had been no clustering.

A 28-year-old male garbage collector from Mandurriao district and a 15-year-old man from Arevalo were the first two deaths reported in January; the ongoing validation relates to a 2-year-old girl from Barangay Tanza Baybay in City Proper district.

She claimed in an interview on Wednesday that the 144 instances reported in Iloilo City from January to April this year remained lower than the 148 cases reported for the same time in 2022.

According to the medical officer, there were weeks from March to April when there were no monitored dengue cases. The average daily case count in January was two to three, and it dropped to one to two cases in February.

Umani claimed that because January was a wet month, there were a lot of cases.

Umani stated that they were looking forward to controlling dengue cases with the projected drought at the end of the third quarter.

The “4S” policy, which entails search and destroy, early consultation, self-protective measures, and saying “yes” to fogging in the event of an outbreak, was nonetheless urged on by the speaker, who also urged the public to adhere to it.

She continued, “This is a preventative measure to address dengue.”
