PBBM to new PNP chief: Be noticeable and act honorably

Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr., the new head of the Philippine National Police (PNP), has been ordered by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to make himself known and, like previous top officers before him, “serve the people with integrity, with accountability, and genuine justice.”

During the retirement ceremonies for Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr. and the installation of Acorda at the PNP headquarters in Camp Crame, Quezon City on Monday, Marcos also gave the police force assurances of the administration’s complete support, including the upgrading of manpower and equipment.

Make the streets safer by being more visible there. Defend the principles and institutions of democracy. In his speech, Marcos urged Acorda to “protect the people, particularly the weak, the vulnerable, and those who indirectly cooperate with us in the same cause, such as journalists, civic action organizations, civic volunteers, and the like.”

The PNP, according to him, must “enhance operational ties with other law enforcement agencies, both at the local and national levels, to ensure integrated coordinated, and systematic approaches in addressing our recent peace and order and internal security issues.”

Under his leadership, the administration, according to the President, would “boost the morale of our personnel, hone their skills, and advance their capabilities.”

The Ilocos Norte-born 55-year-old Acorda graduated from the Philippine Military Academy’s “Sambisig” Class of 1991.

He is the second PNP commander under the Marcos government and the 29th overall. He is anticipated to work until Dec. 3, when he will retire.

Acorda, according to Marcos, will encounter a variety of difficulties. He hopes his leadership will be “led to its desired path towards rebuilding and strengthening continuous improvement and capacity building.”

He instructed Acorda to “always be open to public scrutiny and exercise restraint and maximum tolerance in the face of harsh criticism.” Through effective, moral, and caring police work, “a united police force, always strive to win the trust, respect, and admiration of our citizens.”

The selection of Acorda was applauded by Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri, who anticipates that he will make the PNP “sharper and more active.”

He claimed that Acorda was successful during his tenure as the commander of Police Regional Office-10 (Northern Mindanao), reducing crime by 9.40% in the first half of 2022.

Zubiri, who is from the province of Bukidnon, said in a statement that “Our streets and communities have been safer and more peaceful, and our trust in our law enforcement agencies has been much higher.”

He thinks he will be able to accomplish for the entire nation what Acorda was able to accomplish for Region 10.

Marcos made the “right and best choice in appointing Acorda,” according to Senator Ronald Dela Rosa, the first PNP commander of the Duterte administration, in another statement.

He claimed that the police force’s internal purification effort urgently needs Acorda’s exposure in the intelligence field.

“He is a silent operator and a very professional officer who doesn’t give in to pressures from selfish politicians,” Dela Rosa said of the former leader of the PNP Intelligence group.

The legacy of Azurin

Azurin received praise from Marcos for his 38 years of useful service.

General Jun Azurin’s leadership and contribution to the PNP and the nation are acknowledged on behalf of the Filipino people by me, he added.

Despite the “demanding and perilous journey,” he said Azurin served “with dedication, bravery, and selflessness.”

He emphasized that it also applies to the other retirees who did so in secrecy after serving the nation with the finest professionalism and ethics.

“Amid this important event we’re hosting today, I want to let each of you know that our thankful citizens truly appreciate everything you do. The government’s fight against all types of disorder and criminality is ongoing, therefore I hope that despite my retirement, all of you will continue to support it. The task is never done,” he stated.

“The cost of peace and order is not only constant and continuing but also fluid,” added Marcos, “especially in today’s volatile world.”

He claimed that the administration faces difficulty in keeping peace and justice since terrible crimes and numerous corrupt activities continue to occur.

Therefore, we must make sure that our law enforcement agencies, particularly our police force, continue to be powerful and formidable in the face of all of these. They must be successful in their operations for gathering intelligence and conducting investigations, holding people accountable, and, of course, upholding the rule of law impartially, added the speaker.
