To increase revenue, the NegOcc ARB group uses plant tissue cultivation.

The Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) has chosen an ARBO (agrarian reform beneficiaries organization) in Murcia, Negros Occidental to participate in a plant tissue culture to boost farm productivity and income.

DAR Negros Occidental-I (North) is helping the Villa Carolina Integrated Organic Farmers Association, situated in Barangay San Miguel, develop a tissue culture laboratory with a greenhouse facility, at a cost of PHP7.067 million.

According to Aisah May Ardiente, OIC’s chief agrarian reform program officer of the Program Beneficiaries Development Division, the group has been pre-selected to receive the greenhouse facility, a project funded by the Agrarian Reform Fund under the Sustainable and Resilient Agrarian Reform Communities (SuRe ARC) program.

Through the enterprise-based crop nursery initiative, “this will help them increase their livelihood activities and generate more income,” she continued.

The project, a partnership between the DAR and the provincial government of Negros Occidental, was formalized by a memorandum of understanding signed in December by Governor Eugenio Lacson and DAR 6 (Western Visayas) Director Sheila Enciso.

The tissue culture project would result in the quick creation of high-quality and consistent planting materials that could be multiplied all year long under disease-free conditions anywhere, regardless of the season or weather. This would be a technological advancement in plant propagation.

As a result, the recipient ARBO’s annual yield would rise, and the ARBs’ farm productivity and income would rise as well.

The ARBs would have access to high-quality seedlings through the SuRe ARC program run by the DAR, which would also assure the creation of enhanced agricultural types and higher-quality plant materials.

According to Provincial Agrarian Reform Program Officer I Edwin Mendame Jr., the opportunities and tissue culture technologies would inspire the younger generation to work in agriculture.
