Rowers nationwide began competing in the 3rd Dragon Boat Festival on Friday at Paoay Lake Natural Park.

The three-day dragon boat festival, held by the local government of Paoay in collaboration with the provincial government of Ilocos Norte, intends to promote paddle sports to the next generation and show off the lake’s beauty as a prime location for water sports tourism.

More than ten teams from the inter-agency category, in addition to secondary and primary schools, will compete in the dragon boat race, which will take place on Sunday, according to Mayor Shiella Galano, who spoke at the event’s start.

In addition, the second leg of the national championship for the Philippine Canoe Kayak Dragonboat Federation, featuring 10 participating teams, will be held there.

Three players of the national squad, who are from Paoay town, are also in town for training in preparation for the Southeast Asian Games.

The Paoay government intends to expand the competition by accepting additional boat clubs in the future. It is now open to all dragon boat club teams for the men’s and women’s divisions.

Up until the pandemic, the Paoay Lake had been developed by the government of Ilocos Norte into one of the province’s top tourist destinations and a well-liked location for national and international rowing competitions.
