To strengthen PH-US relations, the House accepts the PBBM challenge.

On Wednesday (US time), House Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez applauded President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s suggestion that efforts to strengthen the long-standing friendship between the Philippines and the United States should also involve the respective legislative bodies of the two nations.

Romualdez asserted that the House of Representatives is prepared to take on the task of enhancing the decades-old ties between the two countries through the persistent involvement of MPs from each nation.

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos Jr. suggested that efforts to strengthen the long-standing friendship between the Philippines and the United States should also involve the respective Legislative branches of the two countries. “We, at the House of Representatives, welcome that suggestion,” the Speaker said.

He continued, “We are prepared to take on that challenge and we look forward to further interactions with our counterparts in the United States.”

Marcos and other delegation members met with prominent US Senate figures on Wednesday to discuss a range of topics, including security, defense, agriculture and climate change mitigation, economic cooperation, and cyber security.

Marcos expressed his gratitude to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee’s other members and chairman, Senator Robert Menendez, for welcoming his group to Capitol Hill during the meeting.

Marcos also mentioned during the aforementioned discussion that interactions between Manila and Washington should involve both the legislatures of both countries as well as the executive branch.

While the Executive largely controls foreign policy, Romualdez noted that legislators from both countries could work together to, for example, harmonize the laws governing their respective countries bilateral relations.

The parliamentarians of both nations would assist raise the level of respect and understanding on matters of mutual interest by participating in such engagements, he continued, which would foster even tighter cooperation and partnership.

Romualdez declared, “We have truly taken the initiative to advance in the direction proposed by President Marcos.

It may be recalled that Speaker Romualdez and other House members traveled to the United States in the middle of April to meet with influential members of Congress and build the basis for Marcos’ official visit to the country.
